Schilthorn Switzerland Travel Guide

Schilthorn Switzerland Travel Guide

The country of Switzerland is one which surpasses all others in terms of scenic beauty, natural wonders and hospitality. The mountains of Switzerland are truly majestic. The Alps dominate the scenery of the country, the shadow of it overshadowing all else. The beauty of the country is something which one must experience at least once in one's lifetime.

The mountains of Switzerland are a sight to behold in themselves. The panoramic view, the serenity and the great heights makes them imposing yet appealing at the same time. The Alps have a large number of very high peaks of which Schilthorn is one of the highest. The 2970 meter high summit is located in the Burmese Alps just above the city of Murren.

There are not many routes of going up to Schilthorn since the peak is quite high up and isolated from the rest of civilization. This is why the cable car is the preferred route of going up to the mountain peak. To get to the schilthorn, one needs to take a series of cable cars that start from Stechelberg, through Gimmelwald and then to Murren.

After you reach Murren you can take another cable car which will take you to the Schilthorn via another stop, which is Birg. Though the method of going up the mountain is complicated, half the fun is in the journey. The cable car is a quaint way of getting to what is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

When you reach the summit, you will find that the long trip was worth it. Another alternative route is to take a train to Murren from where you can take cable car. For those who are into adventure sports a more satisfactory option is to hike up to the top of the peak which is a journey of about 5 hours by foot along narrow but well marked paths.

The myriad of paths that take you up to the mountain peak are a dream come true for any hiker and is an opportunity that should not be missed. After hiking up the entire way, the feeling that you get when you look down at the extraordinary view is one that is unmatched.

People often visit Schilthorn in Switzerland because this is the spot where the James Bond film, 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' was set. The spot is a must visit and the ski runs, popularized in the movie, worth a try.
