Neuchatel Switzerland Tourist Guide

Neuchatel Switzerland Tourist Guide

Regal castles, scenic lakes, wonderful weather and a sparsely populated city equal the capital city of canton of Neuchatel!

Location

The Germans were once the residents of this area way back in the medieval ages and hence the place is also known by its German name - Neuenberg. It was also under the Prussian control till the recently (1848). The Lake of Neuchatel is where the place derives its name from. The lake is south east from the city and has presence on the north western shore of the lake.

Major languages spoken are French and German but French can be mentioned as the local language in the region. The Jura range makes it difficult for extensive rail and road lines to be built and hence, the main adventure is in having a train ride in the region that rises steeply across the Jura range! If at all Switzerland was famous for its watches, this is the place for the fame!

The best Swiss watch brands are located here; it is a surprise for a quaint little place to have such high precision instrumentation and technology facilities.

Interesting Places You Cannot Do Without

As already mentioned above, the steep rise of the Jura range is something that has to be witness when in Neuchatel. Also, there is the famous castle of Neuchatel that is an architectural marvel. It is interesting because it is built so beautifully in surrounded by small mountains and overlooking the great lake on one side.

There are 140 street fountains that further exemplify the beauty of the city - tourists just love the place. It has both the feel of a quaint city life amidst nature and that is something to swear by! The place is also small enough to be covered all along by foot, if you wish to and if you're staying for sometime in the region. And of course, one cannot leave without having a look at the huge museums of Neuchatel in the place.

Connectivity and Transportation

It has the famous Trolley bus transportation network that is well connected to major cities. The interurban light rail network is busiest of its kind and transports daily over 40000 people. Airport is also close by at a distance of around 9 kilometers from the city center; Zurich and Geneva can be traversed within the same time (around 1 and half hour). Market places might be costly for the shoestring budget tourist and hence they can find cheap accommodation on the outskirts.
